Getting Moving for Money!
Kairos church member Sam Blakey, who also volunteers as a youth leader at Starbeck Youth Club, plans to help raise funds for the Create Space youth project by taking part in the half marathon at The Leeds Running Festival in Roundhay Park, on August 30th.
She says: “I love working with the kids at the youth club. When I was growing up it was these clubs that gave me a combination of shelter and fun.
“A designated space is priceless. A space where young people can form new friendships or simply be with their school friends in comfortable surroundings, having a laugh and bonding together.”
Sam is hoping to extend her challenge to include the ‘Run My Way’ virtual London Marathon next April.
“I’m also hoping some of our young people will join me for parts of the last 10km of the race – around The Stray – and get their own sponsorship to boost the building fund even more.
“It would be a fantastic way to get the youth more involved in the project; after-all, it is all about them!”
Pipping Sam at the post is Helen Brocklehurst, who is walking the Three Peaks later this month to help raise funds for the project. As the new charity Lead for Netmakers, a Kairos community partner, she plans to complete the 24 mile and three climbs walk in an impressive 12 hours.
“I usually do this walk with a large group, so that often dictates pace,” says Helen. I’m hoping to complete it in under 12 hours walking it solo.”
