Home, Family, Work: Promise pt 2

There are three promises God makes to Abraham and Sarah, and then again and again through the bible: a place, a people, purpose.  Or to put it another way – home, family, and work.  Can you spot them in the call of Abraham?   Go to the land I will show you; I will make you a great nation, I will bless you and through you all nations will be blessed.  (My paraphrase or Gen 12: 1-3).

These promises seem to thread all the way through the story of the bible, and our stories as well.
Perhaps they speak to some of our deepest needs –

A place to feel safe and flourish.
Relationships that sustain and bring life.
Activity that is purposeful and a blessing.

Sometimes they are most beautifully expressed in the Psalms.

He brought me out into a spacious place.  Ps 18:19
God sets the lonely in families.  Ps 68: 6
He leads me in paths of righteousness.  Ps 23: 3

Home, family, work.  These can be full of rich goodness, but are some of the things that people spend most time worrying about.  They can also be the causes of deep grief.  God’s promises include these three things, our longing for them is good and one day will be fully satisfied.

Home, family, work: which is the most acutely felt desire for you?

Holy God, you are faithful.
I trust in your promises.
